Plantation: The Real Cost of Tobacco

How do you harvest thousands of acres quickly and cheaply?

The answer is often to use Child Labour. It's the cheapest option, and for some families, the only answer to survival.

When tobacco is harvested it is sold to large companies - the farmers themselves do not see much of the profit. 1 kilo of dried tobacco leaves is sold at auction for around 30p. Tobacco companies buy in dollars - but the farmers are paid in local currency, which means they receive less money for their efforts.

Plantations are hard places to work. Workers get sick from pesticides. There is evidence that children are beaten.
